International Day of Persons with Disabilities

3 December

On 3 December we celebrate International Day of Persons with Disabilities (IDPD). This annual event is about promoting an understanding of disability issues and mobilising support for the dignity, rights and wellbeing of persons with disabilities.

In Elmbridge, there is support available including a range of activities and sport:

Access to sport

Judo
Hollywater Judo Club, Hersham Community Centre,  Burhill Road, Hersham KT12 4BJ. For children aged 8 to 16. Cost £4 per session.
Hollywater Judo Club is one of only 2 Judo Clubs in the South East of England to be Registered with Special Olympics Great Britain. The club is affiliated with British Blind Sport.

Karate
Abel Karate. Small SEN classes for children aged 6+

Abel Karate's 'Be Inspired Project' is an innovative programme, which aims to promote awareness through action that children and young people with disabilities thrive in sport.

Social clubs:

  • NOVA for adults with learning disabilities age 25+ meets fortnightly on Wednesdays 7pm to 9pm
  • Youth Club for young people aged 16 – 25 meets fortnightly on a Wednesday evening 7pm to 9pm
  • One to One club for adults with learning disabilities age 18+ Thursday evenings 7.30pm – 9.00pm
  • Family Fun once a month on a Saturday afternoon 2pm to 4pm
  • Cinema Nights once a month on a Saturday evening 5.55pm to 7.30pm
  • Cost: £4 a session for all clubs and activities
