Reporting dead wild birds
Avian flu (H5N1)
We are aware of reports of avian flu (H5N1) being present in birds around the Thames.
Bird Flu is a disease of birds caused by a virus closely related to the human influenza viruses. Most strains of the virus have little effect on birds, but there is a strain, (H5N1), that can cause death in birds.
Reporting dead wild birds
Call Defra on 03459 335577 or email helpline@defra.gsi.gov.uk if you find:
- one or more dead birds of prey
- 3 or more dead gulls or wild waterfowl (swans, geese and ducks)
- 5 or more dead birds of any species
You do not need to report any other found dead wild birds. Bird flu is not a notifiable disease in wild birds.
For information on animal health issues and suspicious deaths in poultry you should contact the State Veterinary Service, Animal Health Division Office,
Surrey Trading Standards are collecting information on the location of all poultry including caged birds.
Do not touch or pick up any dead or visibly sick birds that you find. For further information see, DEFRA's advice for the public.
If you are a birdkeeper, be aware that a housing order has been put in place.
