Voter identification will be required for the first time in polling stations from May 2023.

We will be holding events in the borough to help residents apply for their free Voter Authority Certificate (Voter ID) if needed.

Voter identification will be required for the first time in polling stations from May 2023.  This means that electors will now be required to show photographic identification at polling stations before they are given a ballot paper.

This will affect all electors who vote in person or by proxy, at the next borough Council and Claygate Parish Council elections on Thursday 4 May.  Voter photo ID is not required for voters who have chosen to vote by post.

If an elector or their proxy does not have an accepted form of ID and wants to vote at the polling station, they will need to apply for a free Voter Authority Certificate. The deadline for this is 25 April

We will be holding drop in events at local Centres for the Community for residents who don’t have access to a computer, or need support, to assist with their Voter ID application process. 

  • Friday 17 March, 10am to 12.30pm - Molesey Centre for the Community, Bishop Fox Way, West Molesey, KT8 2AS
  • Friday 17 March, 1.30pm to 3.30pm - Cobham Centre for the Community, Oakdene Road, Cobham, KT11 2LY
  • Monday 20 March, 9.30am to 12.30pm - Hersham Centre for the Community, 7 Queens Road, Hersham, KT12 5LU
  • Friday 24 March 1pm to 3.30pm - Hersham Centre for the Community, 7 Queens Road, Hersham, KT12 5LU

Residents will need to bring their National Insurance Number to apply for their Voter Authority Certificate. The easiest way to find it is on a document you already have, for example a letter about tax, pensions or benefits, a payslip or P60, online through your personal tax account or in the HMRC app. If you do not have a National Insurance Number, your application may take longer to process and you may be asked to provide further proof of identity.

Anyone who wants to have their say in the elections this May must also be registered to vote. It only takes five minutes to register online.

Voters wishing to apply for a free Voter Authority Certificate should first make sure they are registered to vote.
