The nation mourns

Elmbridge Borough Council joins the country in mourning the death of Queen Elizabeth II and sends its condolences to the Royal Family.

The Union flag is flying at half-mast at the Civic Centre in Esher as a mark of respect.

The Mayor of Elmbridge, Councillor Simon Waugh, on behalf of Elmbridge Borough Council extends his deepest condolences to the Royal Family on the death of Her Majesty The Queen. “Her Majesty The Queen’s public service over many years was an inspiration to us all. Her commitment to the country truly enhanced the lives of so many and that legacy will live on for generations to come.”

The Leader of Elmbridge Borough Council, Councillor Chris Sadler extends his deepest condolences to the Royal Family on the death of Her Majesty The Queen. “Elmbridge Borough Council joins with the country in mourning the death of Her Majesty The Queen. She truly embodied public service and her dedication to both public and voluntary service is an inspiration to all of us.” 

The Chief Executive of Elmbridge Borough Council, Mr. Adam Chalmers, extends his condolences on the death of Her Majesty The Queen. “Her Majesty The Queen was a committed public servant who believed in duty, morality and civic pride. These ideals are as important now as they have ever been.  She will be remembered for both her sense of duty and her sense of humour and we join with the nation in mourning her death.”


Sending a message of condolence

Residents are welcome to sign the Royal Family’s online Book of Condolence or to sign a physical Book of Condolence, details below.

From Monday 12 September until 5pm on Monday 26 September a Book of Condolence is available at Elmbridge Borough Council Civic Centre, High Street, Esher, KT10 9SD, 9am-4.30pm.

  • The Civic Centre is not open at weekends or Bank Holidays. The extended time period is reflective of the Royal Family's period of mourning.

Other Books of Condolence are available at the below locations until 3.30pm on Friday 16 September.

Local floral tributes

In addition to the information on floral tributes set out by the Royal Family, residents can leave floral tributes at the base of the Union flag pole at the front of the Civic Centre in Esher.  Civic Centre, High Street, Esher, KT10 9SD. Please remove the plastic packaging when leaving flowers.

National minute's silence on Sunday 18 September

A minute's silence will be held on Sunday 18 September at 8pm to mourn and reflect on the life and legacy of Queen Elizabeth II, the Government has confirmed. For those gathering together in groups, there is a suggested order of ceremony should you wish to follow it. 


Bank holiday for Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II’s State Funeral on 19 September

19 September, the date of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II’s State Funeral, will be a national bank holiday. This will allow individuals, businesses and other organisations to pay their respects to Her Majesty and commemorate Her reign, while marking the final day of the period of National Mourning.


The State Funeral and Committal Service for Her Majesty The Queen

The doors of Westminster Abbey will open in preparation for the coming congregation from 8.00am on Monday 19 September. The State Gun Carriage of the Royal Navy, drawn by 142 sailors, will carry her coffin from Westminster Hall to the Abbey for the service, which begins at 11.00am

national two minutes' silence will be held as the service ends, just before noon.

After the Abbey service concludes, the Queen's coffin will be carried in a further procession to Wellington Arch. It will then be conveyed to Windsor by road, before a second service takes place at St George's Chapel, led by the Dean of Windsor.

Television broadcasts

Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II’s funeral service will be televised on BBC One, BBC News and will be available to stream on BBC iPlayer. It will also be shown on ITV and Sky News will have live coverage throughout the day on Sky News and the Sky News App, YouTube and on Freeview.

Proclamation

On Sunday 11 September a Proclamation ceremony took place at Elmbridge Borough Council.  Residents can watch the playback of this ceremony.
